Research Interests: My research involves QTL and candidate gene mapping of ecologically significant cottonwood traits. Specifically, we are focusing on chemical, phenological, and plant architecture traits that affect dependent species, communities, and ecosystems. I am also working on the population genetics of relict cottonwoods in the mountains of Nevada. These ecological relicts are thought to be remnants of Pleistocene populations which became fragmented during the formation of the Mojave and Great Basin deserts. Based on what we know about the effects of cottonwood genetic variation on dependent species, these relict systems represent natural labs for studying the ecological and evolutionary consequences of climate change at multiple levels of organization.
